- worked on the development of penicillin.
- Chain fled to Britain from the Nazis 1933.
- After the discovery of penicillin by
- Alexander Fleming, Chain worked to isolate
- and purify it. For this work, he shared the
- 1945 Nobel Prize for Medicine with Fleming
- and Howard Florey. Chain also discovered
- penicillinase, an enzyme that destroys
- penicillin.
